Our History
1906 – Bearden Addition
The earliest subdivision built in the Greater Town North Area is Bearden Addition. This neighborhood sits in the far southeast corner of the Association boundaries. Dora Street in the original map below would become North Pecan and Harrison Street would become North Oak.
1925 – Longmont Subdivision
Z.T. Slaughter plats out the first sub-division in what is not the Greater Town North Area and on March 10, 1925, requested the City of Arlington annex the new subdivision. Center Street bounds the area to the east, Oak Street to the west and Randol Mill Road to the north.
1941 – Ridgeway Addition
The original Ridgeway Addition is platted to what is now east of Town North Shopping Center.
1959 – Town North Development
In 1959, Harold P. Smith, then President of the Texas Builder’s Association and founder of Smithbilt Homes, developed a small master-planned community.
Initially, the community featured approximately 100 homes and a large retail shopping center anchored by a Buddies Supermarket, which later became a Winn-Dixie (Now Foodland). The development also included the National Bank of Arlington (now PNC Bank) and a full-service gas station, which is now a Valero.
This development coincided with the opening of Arlington Memorial Hospital (Now Texas Health Arlington Memorial) in 1958, which contributed to the community’s growth. Today, many of the homes retain their Mid-Century Mini-Ranch Style aesthetic.
1970s-1980s – Garden Oaks
The final subdivisions to be added were Garden Oaks and Garden Oaks West which were the last swaths of vacant land in the area.
